Rooftop decks on the ADU
We’re moving along on our current San Diego ADU build. The shell is coming together—lath is up on the exterior, stucco’s about to start, and the siding is almost wrapped up. While all that’s happening, we’ve also jumped into the next stage: waterproofing the outdoor spaces.
This ADU has an exterior patio right off the dining area on the first floor, plus a staircase that leads up to a rooftop deck with some of the best views in San Diego—you can see from the airport all the way down to Tijuana. Keeping those spaces watertight is critical, so we’re using the Westcoat waterproofing system. Westcoat’s been at it since the 80s, and for good reason—it’s solid, proven, and built for our coastal climate.
We actually got lucky with a light rain shower while the system was curing, which gave us a real-world test. The water moved exactly how it was supposed to—no pooling, no surprises. Always nice when the theory matches the reality.
Once the waterproofing’s done, we’ll be installing the railing. For this project we’re going with Viewrail’s cable railing to keep the sightlines wide open. Honestly, I can’t wait to sit up here once everything’s finished and just take in that view.
